Aeration and Overseeding for Cool-Season Grass

Aeration and Overseeding for Cool-Season Grass

If your lawn gets a lot of use then it’s only a matter of time before your soil becomes compact. Lawns with compact soil prevent water and nutrients from getting down to the roots of your grass. This will cause your grass to exhibit signs similar to drought but no matter how much water you use it will never green up. We can fix that problem with core aeration. Core aeration pulls hundreds of tiny plugs of sod from your lawn to loosen soil and thatch and let water, nutrients, and air flow back into the roots.

Fescue Grass
This cool-season grass has several varieties and usually presents as a deep green. It grows quickly and easily, unlike other types of grass. The roots of fescue are quite strong once the grass begins to grow, and it can be difficult to care for.

Core Aeration for Warm-Season Grass

Core Aeration for Warm-Season Grass

Turf that is considered warm-season grass can be boosted by core aeration. This service will stop soil from becoming compacted, allow turf to be more protected from heat stress as well as drought stress. With core-aeration, your turf will be able to absorb more water and fertilizer while being fed.

Centipede
This particular grass can be tough to care for. It can turn a yellow color when it becomes unhealthy, but should not be treated with overseeding like other types of warm-season grasses.

Zoysia
This type of turf will be tough for weeds to plant their roots, so you won’t see as many when caring for Zoysia. It will also be more resilient year to year than other types of grass, as Zoysia is the first to redeem itself as the seasons change.

Bermuda
Bermuda grass has a thick skin, protecting itself against dehydration and drowning from overflow. With roots that range from 6 inches to 6 feet deep, Bermuda grass will protect itself from harmful outside elements.

Some signs that your yard needs to be aerated can include:

  • Compacted soil
  • Thin areas in turf
  • Excessive Thatch

After your yard is aerated we recommend fertilization to help promote grass in bare spots and boost your turf’s ability to fend off disease, weeds, and drought. After core aeration and overseeding are performed you will see a considerable difference in the appearance of your lawn.
